Preventing Crime: What Works, What Doesn'T, What's Promising
Published in Paperback by DIANE Publishing Co (July, 1997)
Authors: Lawrence W. Sherman, Denise Gottfredson, Doris MacKenzie, and John Eck
Average review score:

Thorough Review of the Effectiveness of Crime Policies
This is one of the most comprehensive reviews of evaluations of policies designed to prevent crime available. Though now somewhat dated, each author in the book takes an area of criminal justice, reviews the evaluations available at that time, and reports those findings. If you want to know which programs work to prevent crime, as well as which programs do not, this is a handy reference to have. All criminal justice practitioners and policy makers should be required to read this work before implementing any new policies or programs designed to prevent crime.

Primer of Sectional Anatomy With Mri and Ct Correlation
Published in Paperback by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (February, 1990)
Authors: Charles P. Barrett, Steven J. Poliakoff, and Lawrence E. Holder
Average review score:

Great book!
This atlas is perfect for medical students in just about any year. It is great for students taking anatomy because it shows cross sections that help you understand where structures are as they move through the body.

Fantastic correlation between the gross cross sections and then the MRI or CT scan on the same pages for easy comparision back and forth. The labels are very clear and easy to read. Great book to use for studying for exams!

I would recommend this book for any student taking gross anatomy or radiology. Also great for students just to quickly refresh radiology skills in any rotation.

Principles of Bone Biology
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (15 January, 1996)
Authors: John P. Bilezikian, Lawrence G. Raisz, and Gideon A. Rodan
Average review score:

Bone Biology
This book is an encyclopedic and thorough survery of normal bone, bone biology, formation, and remodeling. Clincial aspects of bone are also covered in great detail. For a volume this size with multiple authors, the book maintains a uniformly high standard. The illustrations are excellent and color plates are used where necessary. While one plate in Chapter 17 was to go in Chapter 18, it is a minor point. The chapters on the hormonal control of bone remodelling and the discussion of the process of remodelling were particularly interesting and well done. For graduate students or physicians interested in bone biology, the volume is a must!

Principles of Critical Care
This is an excellent review of the most common problems found in the clinical practice of Critical Care. It helps with the initial assessment of the patient and formulates a systematic approach to the differential diagnosis and therapeutic plan. The bibliography is updated and it has detailed illustrations and diagrams. Certainly, recommended as reference for those persons involved in the management of Critical Care patients.

A Private Matter: Ru 486 and the Abortion Crisis
Published in Hardcover by Prometheus Books (September, 1995)
Authors: Lawrence Lader and Eleanor Smeal
Average review score:

UNBIASED RECENT HISTORY OF ABORTION AND FRENCH PILL
Lawrence Lader spent a lifetime on the pro-contraception and pro-choice barricades in the American women's reproductive rights movement. Indeed, he was co-founder of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League). One would therefore expect this writer to produce a shrilly biased account of the story that chronicles the women's movement to provide constitutional control over their own bodies. This was carried out against formidable resistance from the powerful political lobbying efforts of the Catholic Church and their Christian, Jewish and Islamic cohorts.

Having myself spent a lifetime in medical research to improve family plannning, had I written an account of its history perhaps the injustices and hypocrasy which I witnessed by those who would assume moral authority over all of humanity would have certainly made my writings biased. Yet Lader gives a rather balanced overview, trying to exercise respect for the position of his enemies; those calling themselves pro-life or putting the Pro-Life brand name on it.

From the early struggles of daring to place contraceptives into the hands of needy young people through the development of the safe abortion pill in France, Lader simply delivers factual accounts of its scientific, medical and political history. Of course, he doesn't fail to neglect the wicked political hippocrasy of the Republican Party who begin by first rallying around Richard Nixon's national and global agendas of promoting widespread family planning as part of his national security program for the 1970s. Exposaed here are two of Nixon's staunchest family planning supporters: Governor Ronald Reagan of California (liberalizer of his state's restrictive abortion laws) and Congressman George W. Bush of Texas, the point man for global contraception and abortion. Gleaning support for his presidential campaign from American Catholics and their allies for putting a stop to Nixon's efforts, Jimmy Carter begins cashing in on the anti-abortion movement. They get the message, and pretty soon Reagan and Bush do a 180-degree moral reversal so that the White House can become theirs. [Is any creature lower than politicans?]

In the end, French scientists led by Georges Teutsch and Emile Etienne Baulieu trying to produce a new treatment for overactive adrenal glands accidently stumble on the first safe drug for induction of first trimester abortion: RU-486. Lader carefully chronicles the medical and political developments accompanying this new drug. Against enormous odds, President Bill Clinton and Vice President Gore fulfill their 1992 campaign pledges of making RU-486 available to American women.

To gain insight into a very significant history of the emergance of women's reproductive rights in the 20th century this book is an indispensible sourcebook for educating the enlightened reader.

The Project Management Memory Jogger: A Pocket Guide for Project Teams (Growth Opportunity Alliance of Lawrence)
Published in Spiral-bound by Goal/Qpc (August, 1997)
Authors: Paula Martin, Francine Oddo, and Karen Tate
Average review score:

A must-read for anyone who manages projects.
Whether you work on huge, complex, international projects for one of the Fortune 50 or you are putting together a family reunion, you will find something of value in this little book. But don't let either the size of the book (pocket) or the size of the print (small) fool or intimidate you. The ideas are clear and accessible.

These two consultants have written a project management book for our times. Their approach is team-based and collaborative -- particularly useful for those of us who work in organizations that use teams but still think in functional silos -- as well as practical and flexible. Personally, I have always found other project management models to be too complex, too highly delineated, and too quantitative. This approach is logical, fact-based, and flexible enough for me to work the parts that apply and skip the ones that don't.

I highly recommend the book as well as the approach. If you want to get the full benefit of their methodology, bring the authors in for in-house training. That way, the kinesthetic and auditory processors in your organization will "get it" even better.
